There are a few things in this world that you just can’t recover from. It’s one of the big ten, in terms of sin. Bearing false witness. It’s not just lying, lying may only pertain to being untruthful about something you are guilty of. Bearing false witness kills someone else’s character, maybe forever. The question was once asked, “Where do I go to get my reputation back.” I don’t think there is such a place.
In 2003 I took a few days off from work and headed to Alabama with my oldest daughter, to take a stand. The issue at the time was the ten commandments, and Montgomery Alabama was in the news. Whether to remove them from the courthouse or let them stay. In the end the ten commandments were removed and we all went home. The political figure at the head of the fight to keep the commandments was Judge Roy Moore.
Now, fourteen years later, just before an election to the United States Senate, this man who has been well know to the public for decades, has been accused of sexual misconduct from decades ago. Why now? Why not fourteen years ago? Why not then? It doesn’t matter. Doubt has been sown. But that’s not true is it? It does matter. It matters to voters. It matters to Roy Moore, and his family. It matters to those who placed trust in him.
Doubt. Something like this destroys much more than the intended target.
In the end, he may be guilty, but I honestly hope not. If he is, throw him to the dogs that are waiting. If he is innocent, what then? Many are calling this dirty tricks, but I disagree. Guilty or innocent, this man has been damaged by sin. Is he the predator or victim? We will most likely never know, but while the purpose of all this is to win an election, these allegations will never leave our minds. Mission accomplished.
My confidence in politics remains unchanged however… I have none.
