There are some things that a good Christian just doesn’t talk about.
I’ll wait while the reader’s mind races through the list of damnation hall of fame inductees. I was always told that you don’t discuss politics or religion, but I can’t imagine a respectable Christian who never mentions Christ. Oops, I think I just described most of us, but it’s not that. It’s not that nobody knows about our faith. Politics then? Definitely not politics, because everybody knows our politics. Even when we don’t come right out and say it, we leave signs…. Or memes. Definitely memes, so it’s not politics either then.
He said Taboo, so what could it be? What is it Wayne?….
Music.
There are less than five songs written in the last thirty years that I have any recollection of in gospel music, and most of what they do play in church now is too loud and seems to be as much for entertainment as for worship, but when I look around folks are worshipping. No Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace, or Because He Lives, but whatever they are singing, everyone around me is singing too. They are singing over the 1,200 watt amps, the muffled drums , the thundering bass, and the vocals that I can make out about one out of every three words. I can remember a day, when every single time my old Sunday school teacher sang in church, she would break down and cry. I remember the power, and I wonder what has changed. Here’s where it begins to get hard…. The truth is, I am what changed. The truth is that way back then I didn’t feel the power all the time, and most of the time I wasn’t even there to worship. The truth is, the decades of living have hardened me, and made me resentful of almost every change thrown in my direction. The truth is that all those folks standing around me are there for worship, and worship is what I see. Attitude is everything. Attitude reveals your heart, is evidence of your heart’s intentions, and in worship, you get what you give.
If we go to church to be entertained, the most we can expect is to be entertained. I’m thinking that if our purpose for going to church is worship, then the least we can expect is worship, and just maybe the Power has been there all along.
