Something happened to Americans. Some say that we became soft, but I don’t think so. I think that we have been lead astray. Was our will really that much stronger in the late seventeen hundreds? The vast majority of the population didn’t even take part in the revolution. And what about the eighteen hundreds? Most of the families that made the push west, did so in relative safety. I admire the three percent that fought for our freedom. I admire the pioneers that pushed west and endured hardship, to make this country ours. Truth is that we took this country, from the east coast to the west coast. We didn’t ask for permission, and we didn’t let anyone stop us. This continent was inhabited by peoples who never united and for the most part lived in the stone age. Until Europeans brought horses to the Americas, Native Americans walked. In all honesty, it was very easy to push them back and defeat them. All of the battles that they won would fit on one page.
Manifest destiny. From continentalism to nationalism.
We don’t believe this way anymore. Our destiny isn’t obvious anymore. We are moving away from nationalism and back toward continentalism. Now there is an argument over a border wall between The United States and Mexico, and we are told everything from It can’t be done to we can’t afford the wall. It wouldn’t work, and on and on and on.
We built the Transcontinental Railroad in about six years. Over nineteen hundred miles long, through mountains, plains and everything between. Six years.
The Panama Canal connected the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific ocean, and after France just gave up trying to build it, we took over in 1904. Ten years later, we did it. We dug a ditch from the Atlantic to the Pacific, deep enough and wide enough that ships could go through. Ten years. Good thing we didn’t have to build a wall.
President Kennedy said that he wanted to send a man to the moon and before the decade was over, we did.
So, how hard can it be to build a border wall? Some say fifteen years or more. Some say that it can’t be done. Wow… maybe we have gotten soft. It seams like our manifest destiny now has become an unrecognized slide into mediocrity. Our President wants a wall. So do I.
